CAMERON: If he was being honest, Cam enjoyed the summers and not just because that meant no homework. He liked the warm air, the greenness of the forest, and despite fire season, it was prime weather for exploring so long as you knew what you were doing and safe about it. It rained nine months out of the year usually in Oregon, and between late May to late September was their prime hot season. Oregon’s natural beauty just always seemed to shine with the tall firs and pines.
It was the reason why Cameron liked his job so much. When he wasn’t playing secretary, Rikki actually let him go check on trails with one of the ATV’s, and thus he knew all the cools spots the forest had to offer. And being a wolf? Well, that had its own benefits. It wasn’t late or early enough for a run though, so Cam had to be careful.
His shift was technically over, but he had nothing better to do, and Rikki was busy with Ken. He’d decided to head up to one of the trailheads that overlooked the lake, and snagged his guitar from the back seat of his mom’s car she thankfully let him drive. He Placed the strap of the case over his body so the case hung off his back. Its familiar weight was a comfort as he started his hike up one of the many trails.
Cam thought about the deal he’d made with Cal, and started to think about what kind of song he wanted to sing at the Faire. His gut was telling him to do an original. If he was going to play in front of a bazillion people he wanted to do it right, and that meant getting his head in the game and planning.
“Please have mercy on me…” He sang softly, testing out the words as he hummed quietly to himself.
KIT: Well, she neither knew what she was doing or where she was going...but wasn't that the point of exploring? Okay, maybe not the best of ideas, but she was becoming restless.
Kit found herself wandering the first forested trail she came upon. She had to admit, Xander's Cross had some lovely wilderness, and yet at times she couldn't help but feel...strange about it? She didn't know what it was, just this heavy feeling of dread in certain areas that would come and go. Maybe she needed to stop watching scary movies.
Aimlessly trekking at first, she eventually saw the signs for the lake and followed her way there. There were some people splashing around, enjoying the summer weather, so Kit made sure to walk her way around the perimeter towards the other side where she could have a bit more silence. Their laughter still echoed, but at least it was a little more peaceful.
And it was beautiful. She wouldn't admit it (because that would mean she had hope), but she wouldn't mind staying in Xander's Cross for a long time. It felt like it was in the middle of nowhere, there was nature everywhere, and more importantly, there were others like her and her family. It was insane to think about! Not that the people here advertised it, but she didn't feel like she had to be as secretive with what she was. In a sense.
There was a fallen log there near the forest's edge, and inside of walking around it, Kit leapt up to balance upon it, before casually walking along it in thought. Her attention was settled upon the lake ahead, but she paused when that fox-like hearing thought she picked up on something. It was very faint, even when she tried to zero in on it. There were footfalls against the dirt, scuffing, steady breathing, and...humming?
Bright blues finally turned their gaze to the trees.
CAMERON: Cam was about a mile up the trail, and still humming along. Not caring he was still in his ranger uniform, though he’d unbuttoned the khaki colored shirt to reveal the white wife beater he had on underneath.
So far he was rather pleased with himself, thinking he nailed down the chorus, but all that was left was, well the rest of the song. It was an emotional one and he felt like he might actually cry about it, as he was thinking of Sidney and what she’d done to him. He’s been so willing to step up for that baby until she’d rocked his world…
He didn’t have the words to tell her how he felt, but he could sing them. That was for sure, and he planned on giving it his all at this fair just like he’d promised Cal. He hoped the old man would do the same. For his sake at least.
“You keep tearing me apart,” he felt his chest ache and for a moment he had to stop on the trail. Tilting his head back as he let out sigh and closed his eyes, running his hand through his hair. The gesture caused the slight curl of Cams hair to stand up on end thanks to the sweat that had formed, but he didn’t care.
He stood there for a moment, listening to the sounds of the forest, letting them wash over him. He could hear faint voices from the lake of swimmers, and decided he’d head further up so he wouldn’t have to see them. Cal and his spot, that’s where he’d go. He took a step to continue when the wind shifted slightly and a faint scent drifted towards him. It was familiar in that he knew it was a werefox, but unfamiliar in that he didn’t know who it belonged too. And Cam thought he knew just about everyone in town, was someone just driving by? Someone new in town?
He felt like he’d be a shit Ranger if he didn’t at least wander in their direction and make sure they were alright. You never knew what could happen in these woods and if they weren’t from town they didn’t know about the deer. And in Xanders Cross, you didn’t fuck with the deer. So, Cam directed his path towards the scent of the fox. Keeping his ears and nose on alert should he be needed.

The closer he got, the easier he became to sense. Kit didn't sense a threat, but she knew after a few moments that it was a wolf. A shifter. For the most part, she had been avoiding the people here ever since Nolan and Cassie informed her that Xander's Cross was essentially a melting pot for the supernatural. They made it sound like it was more of a sanctuary, but it made her wary. She hadn't met many of her kind, if at all, besides her family. The only other shifter had been her father, and wolves felt like a whole other matter to her.
Still, she was curious, especially when she thought she heard singing. Maybe that was what boredom did. Swallowing the nervous lump in her throat, Kit climbed down from the fallen tree to creep further into the woods. Now, normally, she would realize that if she could pick up his scent, it was likely he could pick up on hers unless she happened to be downwind. That didn't seem to stop her from quietly sneaking forward until she picked up on the steady footfalls and she immediately regretted her decision.
Like a coward, she nearly squeaked in surprise, and rushed deeper into the brush to press her back against the tree. Peering around it, she watched the young man come into view, recognizing the wolfen scent immediately as being the one she had picked up on just moments ago. A gentle cant of her head, she found that he was handsome, and it was a sweet kind of handsome. Maybe it was this feeling of sadness that shrouded him, she couldn't quite pinpoint it.
She also noted that this town seemed to be just filled with cuties. Ahem.
But this was weird. No, it was borderline creepy, wasn't it? Just spying like this. Cringing at herself, Kit faced forward again and attempted to sneak away in shame.

Cam kept his pace steady, his brown eyes scanning the area ahead of him as he made his way up the path. The scent was getting stronger, so he knew he was headed in the right direction, he just couldn't see anyone yet. For a brief moment of panic, he wondered if they were injured. His hand instantly groped the front pocket of his shorts, feeling the radio he never went without when he was in the woods.
Rikki was still in the office, that he was sure of. If there was an emergency, big sis would deal with it.
He heard what sounded like a squeek then, and he paused. Brow furrowing in confusion for a slight second. It had been faint, but those wolf ears certainly picked it up, as well as the rustling of bushes. Oh gawed, the shifter hadn't shifted had they? And he was suddenly going to walk upon a naked person? Almost immediately, Cam clamped a hand over his eyes. That was the thing with any type of were. Clothes were only optional and a no go when it came to shifting between forms. He knew from experience not many cared as it was just a natural thing, but you never knew what peoples preferences were, and he sure as hell didn't want to get called a creepy perv, or have a shoe chucked at his head.
"Hello?" He called, keeping his head down as he cupped his hands around his eyes, blocking his peripherals. He continued on the path then, going a bit more slower as he took his time to really pay attention to his surroundings by sound and smell. By this point, the fox shifter had to be around here right? "Uh, forest Ranger? Just checkin to see if you need any help." Yes Cam, lead with that. "Um-uh, hello?" He called again, cautiously peaking up, as he checked his surroundings. "Anyone there?"

This was why she didn't have friends. Well, along with the social awkwardness, she had never really had the time to make friends since her family had always been moving around. That, and she'd never met another of her kind before Xander's Cross. Now, they seemed to be everywhere! Mythics of all different kinds.
'Hello?'
Kit immediately paused mid-step, cringing again. Had he seen her? He certainly knew she was there now. The wolf's steps were slower now, like he was hesitant, and she suddenly didn't feel like she was the only awkward one there.
'Uh, Forest Ranger?'
He was a forest ranger? She didn't know why that seemed weird, but perhaps someone so young could have that kind of job out here where it was nothing but a tiny down and...well, wilderness. Or perhaps he was simply older than he appeared. Regardless, Kit didn't sense any hostility from him.
Sighing softly, realizing it would be stupid to continue to hide or even attempt to flee, Kit stepped back to that tree and peered around to rest those blue eyes on him there on the path. "Aren't you a little young for a forest ranger?" she asked.
What're you doing, trying to quote Star Wars now? Seriously, Kit.
She shut her eyes for a moment and shook her head at herself in slight disbelief, embarrassment taking over. "I'm, uh...I'm fine," she finally added, stepping out from behind the tree a little more. Clearly she was clothed and hadn't shifted, and she was already assuming he knew what she was.
Xander's Cross was definitely proving to be intriguing and surprising.

Just as Cam was looking up he saw that dark head of hair peeking out from behind a tree and saw some of the brightest blue eyes he'd ever seen. He blinked in a bit in surprise, standing there with his hands still shielding the side of his eyes. It registered she was making a joke, and Cam lowered those hands as a bright smile appeared on his face and a huff of laughter came out. "Ranger in training?" He clarified. In truth he only had the job because of his dad and sister, so that was certainly an in. But he was also more of a glorified secretary, but she didn't need to know that.
He started to approach slowly so they could be in easier talking distance while she seemed to recover from something and stepped out from behind that tree. Thankfully fully clothed too. How much of a dork had he looked, walking up the path with his hands shielding his eyes? "That's good, were you at the lake visiting?" He asked, his tone friendly. He certainly hadn't seen her before and thought she was just an out-of-towner visiting. Cam's hands came up to rest on his guitar strap that laid across his chest. "It's really nice this time of year, a lot of the locals go swimming there since the pool in town can get a bit crowded." He said making easy conversation.

Kit tried not to giggle at the sight of him sort of shielding his eyes, and although she managed to suppress some of it, as a wolf he would be able to hear it. What, did he think she was- oh. Oh god. Kit nearly blushed at the thought. No, she was a lot more careful when it came to shifting, and she had yet to do so here in Xander's Cross. She was a little nervous to, actually, which was funny considering that the whole town was full of mythics.
She emerged a little further where his light laughter and big smile brought on a grin of her own. Was it a rule that every boy in this town had to be cute with beautiful smiles? She had noted the same with Nolan...and now she was letting her mind get ahead of herself. Still didn't make any of it less than true. Even Cassie was beautiful, and she felt like a big-eyed doll next to them all.
As he approached closer, she only tensed for a second (a bad habit she didn't know how to break), but didn't make it seem like she was going to bolt. "I was just exploring," she admitted. "Getting to know the town a bit. My, uh...family just moved here." Kit felt like she was saying that a lot these days.
There was gentle hesitation on her part before she continued, finally stepping out onto the path in front of him. "I've never been so...surrounded by others of my kind, either." She knew her senses weren't wrong, but she still wasn't about to be like, "Hey, you're a werewolf, I'm a werefox. Well met!" You know, just in case.

A look of surprise crossed the young wolf’s face as the little fox admitted she was new in town. He tried to remember the last knew kid, and his mind went to Valentina Johnson who had came to town last year. Funny she was also a fox shifter.
“Really? Well welcome to Xander’s Cross!” He beamed at her with a warm smile. He noticed her hesitation, and the surprised look only grew. “Really?” He asked. Okay, way to sound like a broken record Cam… He thought annoyed.
It was strange for him to think about not being around so many mythics. In fact he found it rather comforting, as he knew who he could trust to go to. Being a were definitely had it’s benefits on being able to sense the different species out there and knowing what you were dealing with, and who to be cautious around. Being here in front of another were, he was the most relaxed.
“I know the feeling. I moved a lot as a kid.” He told her with a gentle smile. He certainly did too, though it was a time he had a hard time remembering. He didn’t want to remember. But now? Now Cam had everyone he needed. Or at least… those that mattered. His mind wandered to Sidney for a brief moment, before he shoved those thoughts away. “Ah- I’m Cameron, By the way. Cameron Boehm.” He introduced himself, that smile falling easily back on his face. “There’s plenty of your kind in this town, but also my kind. I wouldn’t be surprised if your folks get a visit from my mom, or the Andersons.” He Chuckled. “It’s ah- bit embarrassing.” He admitted, his cheeks turning a bit pink as he reached up to scratch the back of his head, but that smile never left his face.
“But what can you do? Pack mentality and all.” He grinned sheepishly. “Is your family all foxes too?” He asked curiously. For the most part, you got a whole fam of a certain species unless they were mixed, and Xander’s cross didn’t have many mixed families that he could at least remember about.

Could he, maybe, stop smiling so much? She didn't know this boy, but it was quite clear how distracting he was, and probably without meaning to be.
Blues blinked, and she chuckled softly when he welcomed her to the town. "Thanks." The folks here were certainly very friendly- or, at least most of them were- and she wasn't really used to it. It was strange and refreshing. They really were a tightknit community, weren't they?
Some of the tension eased when the boy continued, speaking and relating to her without really knowing. "We've moved around most of my life," she confessed without thought. "Dad promised this was it, though..." By the way her gaze dropped, how she was holding in a breath and refrained from sighing, it was clear she didn't believe him. She was trying to, but the worry was still lingering at the back of her mind.
Suddenly, he was introducing himself, and she snapped out of her thoughts. Right, manners! "Caitriona Grey," she replied. "But, my family just calls me Kit-" That was where she paused for a dramatic roll of her eyes at the obvious joke there. "I know...it's punny. My dad's fault." Come to think of it, he never really called her by her proper name unless he was angry or very serious. It was so rare, that she wasn't sure what it would sound like to hear someone use it.
"A visit?" She seemed a little bit surprised by that. "What, is there, like...a welcoming committee?" She laughed softly, but his comment about it being embarrassing made her look a little nervous.
Kit hadn't met another werefox yet, but it might have just been that same sense with another shifter that made Cameron immediately comfortable to be around. That damn smile of his also helped. Tremendously.
"Right..." She was speaking, although she hadn't entirely heard what he said about a pack. It wasn't until he asked about her family did those blue eyes blink once again. "Uh...no, just my father. My mother is a witch." Kit paused for a second, her gaze dropping to the dirt as she jabbed at it with the tip of her Converse. "It's really only ever been us, so this...pack stuff is new to me." She wasn't really entirely sure what it was, either. Was it just a wolf thing, or did foxes have packs? Or, well, "skulk" was the proper term.

Cam wondered if maybe the girl was from a military family, and that was why she was always moving. But he also knew it was none of his business, and he wasn’t going to pressure her into telling him either. What he did do was give her that gentle smile and a small nod. “Fingers crossed for you then.” He said holding up a hand with his index finger and middle finger crossed.
The girl introduced herself then, and he chuckled at her nick name. “It is pretty punny.” He grinned. “What do you prefer to be called? Caitriona or Kit?” He asked her. Wanting to be respectful about what she wanted to be called. Names that could be turned into nicknames were always tricky, and some just didn’t care. Like him, he was either Cameron or Cam. It didn’t matter to him, but he knew that Cal for instance preferred to be called Cal over Callum.
His mind was already spinning with all the C’s…
He nodded at her as she seemed surprised by the visit. He laughed then, and his nod turned a bit more enthusiastic as he grabbed his guitar bag strap again. “Yeah, you could say that. It’s a werewolf thing.” He told her. “We’re always looking for people to bring into the pack, were uh-” His eyes rolled up to the sky while he stood there in thought, his lips parted as he looked up at the tree canopies. “I guess a bit like mother hens. Doesn't matter what you are.” He grinned. Yeah, that certainly fit.
He lowered his head to look at her as she explained her mom was a witch, and then went on to say it had just been her and her family. As a werewolf, hearing that anyone had been on their own was hard to hear, and it instantly brought out that protective nature. “I’m not particularly knowledgeable on foxes, but us wolves are very social. We form packs and kind of take care of each other. It’s like a massive family in a way.” He explained. Wanting to help as best he could. “You know, I know a few werefoxes. I could introduce you.” He told her. His instant thought was to introduce her to Val. The Potter sisters would eat poor Catriona alive if given the chance. They could practically smell fear, and if she looked like she had when he’d come up on her, looking hesitant and ready to bolt, they’d eat her alive. Val was the safest choice.
“Val just moved here last year with her dad too. You do any sports?” He asked.

In truth, she was glad that he didn't ask why they traveled a lot, because...she didn't know how she would answer that. Kit didn't know the whole story, and her parents kept promising to explain "when she was older". Was sixteen not old enough?
Pink began to touch her cheeks from soft embarrassment when he laughed at her nickname. But it was when he asked which name she preferred, and hearing her actual name spill from his lips, Kit seemed to pause. It sounded...nice. In a strange kind of way, but nice. Ultimately, she reverted back to the nickname. "Kit's fine," she told him, and wasn't sure if she regretted the decision or not. But, he wouldn't have to worry about all the "C" names now, huh?
She looked clearly amused by the idea of werewolves being "mother hens", but she understood what he was trying to convey, at least. Not that she was entirely sure, but she didn't think foxes had that heavy of a need, or it was a bond with small groups, normally your own flesh and blood. But to feel like you belonged to something a little bigger? Well, she liked the sound of that.
'-I know a few werefoxes. I could introduce you.'
"Really?" Did she sound nervous about that? She kind of felt weird about it, if only because she was well aware that she was an outsider and didn't know this "culture" well. He spoke of a girl named Val and then wondered if she did any sports. Her gentle laugh was almost pity over herself. "I don't know?" Kit tucked a strand of that dark hair behind an ear. "Well, I mean, I never had the chance to really try any." Did that sound as pathetic as she felt it did?
As if to try and keep herself from making it worse, she gestured towards the guitar case slung across his back. "So, you play?" Wasn't that obvious? Stop being weird.

Alright, so Kit it was! He could do that, storing away what she wanted to be called in his mental memory banks.
He nodded at her, his grin widening. “Val’s a bit of a spit fire, but she’s cool. The uh-others, we’ll…” he trailed, moving his head back and forth, unsure of how to answer it. He’d never actually had problems with the Vixens, but he knew what they could do to people. Ultimately, he thought throwing Kit a bone and letting her know what she would be up against once school started was the best choice. “They’re popular girls. Can be a mean if they don’t like you.” He grimaced, running a hand over the back of his head. His fingers brushing the slight waves of soon to be curls if he let his hair grow out any longer.
His hand dropped to his side, moving into his shorts pocket. His eyes widened slightly when she said she’d never tried any sports, so she didn’t know if she’d be any good at them. “Well, you can certainly try now! Great way to make friends, and as my mom puts it “Keeps you out of trouble””. He grinned and playfully rolled his eyes. Hinting that his mom might have said it, but it sometimes didn’t work. Not that Cameron went looking for trouble to begin with. “I’m partial to soccer, but that’s only because I’m the goalie, so I might be a bit biased, but if you decide to do the girls team, Val and Yura will make sure you fit right in.” He encouraged.
Those light browns flickered to his guitar strap when she pointed it out, and he blinked a bit, forgetting he’d even had it on him. His face instantly flamed red. He hadn’t planned on running into anyone, as most people save for his family and Cal actually knew he played. The only person from school that knew he had wanted to start learning guitar had crushed his heart and moved away. She’d even made him self conscious about his playing, about his dream despite Cal’s encouragement. “I-uh- n-n” He started to fumble over his words, nearly about to tell her he didn’t, but the evidence was right there. Breathe, dude geez… He thought to himself. Taking a deep breath, he actually laughed at himself and his sudden embarrassment. It was just a guitar. Still, his insecurities were showing. “Yeah, a little. I haven’t been playing long.” He finally managed to tell her.

This boy seemed like a decent person, so whoever this Val was, Kit was positive that she would likely be just the same. Perhaps she should be making friends on her own, but albeit being a fox (which many associated with slyness and cunning), she could actually be very shy at first. It was only after getting to know her did she come out of her shell a bit.
'They're popular girls. Can be mean if they don't like you.'
Her face fell just a little bit. "Oh, well, then I'm sure I don't meet their standards." That sounded a lot more pitiful than she had meant it to be, and she cringed a little. Still, she knew she wasn't the "popular kind", and wouldn't even pretend or try to be. On top of that, Kit wasn't the type to hang around anyone who would bully another for no reason.
There came a gentle smile at the mention of staying out of trouble. Kit had never thought about sports, and maybe she would be good at them- she'd never know if she didn't try. "I'm a fox...I tend to gravitate towards trouble even when I don't mean to," she joked. The sad thing was, it was actually kind of true. All in all, her parents admitted that she was a good kid, but she was still young and got these impulsive urges. That she blamed on her father. It was certainly a fox trait, the curiosity.
Val and Yura. She packed the names into her memory in case she ever got the chance to meet them, and mention that Cam spoke highly of them. "Yeah, I might think about it," she told him. "But I believe I fall more into the artist category than athlete. Watch me be totally uncoordinated." She laughed quietly at herself.
Kit was quick to realize how his demeanor changed when she asked him about the guitar. If she didn't know any better, he was being just as shy and awkward as she was, but she noted how red his face got. Maybe she shouldn't have asked? Still, she offered him a light smile as if in some form of encouragement, pretending like she didn't notice him stammering over his answer.
"That's still cool. Everyone has to start somewhere, right?" Truthfully, she couldn't fathom why he would be so embarrassed by it, but she wouldn't ask. "What kind of music do you like to play?"

Cam had just continued to smile that smile at her. “Good! Definitely think about it, it’s all just for fun! A lot of were’s do it because we have so much energy.” He quickly explained, hoping she wouldn’t let her fear of uncordination make her not want to try it.
Cam’s grin turned more sheepish as Kit sounded encouraging towards his playing. He knew playing the guitar wasn’t a bad thing, but it was people actually hearing him play. There was a part of him, possibly the crueler side, that wondered if Cal only told him how good he was, was because he didn’t want to hurt his feelings.
If Cal was there right now he’d be smacked up the head for thinking such things… He could practically hear the man giving him grief. He got out if his head at her next question and he blinked in surprise for a moment. “Uhm, well, i started out learning the old stuff. My tutor is a bit of a 80’s rock nut, if you ask me” He laughed. “I enjoy the classics though, trying to be more modern though.” He informed her.
“Cal thinks I can play just about anything,” He added a bit more hesitantly. Trying to be humble and yet there was a fear he’d come across as overconfident. “I was just heading up to our spot to practice for a bit actually before I uh-caught your scent.”

She nodded. Even if she had initial reservations, she'd certainly think about it, although she made no promises. Maybe she'd see about being able to watch a practice or two, or go to one of the games.
Those blue eyes squinted just slightly in amusement, seeing how nervous he got about this whole thing. Not in a cruel way, but it managed to make her feel a little less awkward, and she eased a little more. Something told her that Cameron probably had nothing to worry about in regards to his playing, but she could also see that smile of his easily distracting anyone from everything anyway.
'-bit of a 80's rock nut, if you ask me.'
Chuckling lightly at that, she nodded in understanding. "I knew nothing but the 80's growing up because of my dad," she added. She kept trying to tell him that the hair bands were cheesy, but he didn't care. And that was when he'd break out into his "dad dance" to try and embarrass her. Yes, it worked.
Cam mentioned someone named Cal, and she was assuming it was his teacher, still smiling at the fact the man saw something in his protégé. It was nice to hear. What he said after, however, had her pausing, and almost embarrassingly tucking a strand of that hair behind her ear. Kit didn't know whether to feel like she had intruded or not.
"Well, don't let me stop you," she said gently, trying to sound cheerful and not in some awkward kind of way. So much for not being awkward. "I hear practice makes perfect, or...whatever." She giggled stupidly at herself.

Cam chuckled lightly, nodding in agreement at what Kit said about practice. “You got that right.” He said with that grin and he started to take a few steps forward. Planning on heading up there to practice, and not wanting to keep her from any plans she might have had. After a few steps, he paused, turning slightly around. “Hey- uh, since you’re new…” He began. Not knowing if he was about to come across as coming onto her or anything, but it was summertime and a lot of kids were out doing things or on vacation outside of town.
Cam knew what it was like to be the new kid in town. “If you want a Xander’s Cross tour at all, lemme know.” He told her. “It’s not a problem.” He added quickly before she could try and argue. “You can find me at the ranger station.” He nodded at the direction it was in. “Or ya know…” He brought a shoulder up to shrug casually. “If you wanna do something else.” He grinned a bit sheepishly at her. Letting her know a chance of friendship was there if she wanted to take it. And if not, that was okay with him too.
