Maria Faulkner made it a point to welcome all new witches to the area. Thanks to the local network of both witches and were's, there was always someone to let her know when a new one had arrived. This time, it had been her own daughter, Dorcas, who'd alerted her. It brought a smile to Maria's face to see her daughter welcoming the new arrivals as well. Moving to a new place, with no support, no familiar areas...it was terrifying. She wanted her coven to provide a safe and welcoming home for everyone--to make Xander's Cross the sanctuary it was always meant to be. So, today Maria approached the home of one Andie Grey, apparently a witch who had married a werefox. That was a new combination, for Maria, but she could certainly see the appeal. There was always something attractive and wild about the foxes, and they truly did have a clever twist that the wolves didn't. The house itself gave no indication that its occupants were anything other than a completely normal family. A tricycle sat in the driveway next to a sensible car. The bushes were trimmed, the lawn mowed. Maria shifted her basket of goodies (two soy-wax candles, a bag of dried cherries, cookies made with cinnamon for comfort and warmth, witch bells to hang on the door, a sage bundle for cleansing, and a card with her number and a few other important local numbers--the non-emergency police, the fire department, the clinic, and the mechanic) to one arm, and rang the doorbell.

The notion that the Grey’s were a completely normal family would have been laughable if it wasn’t so painstakingly tragic, about how much they wished they were normal. It would have made things a bit easier on several fronts, namely the running away from Andie’s lunatic father and the cult he called a coven. But yes, they were “normal” on the outside because Andie and Conor had fought to make it seem like that. They were in hiding, standing out was dangerous.
Andie just wished that this really would be the last move… Not only for her and Conor, but for the kids as well.
She was elbows deep in a box, trying to unpack the kitchen things, while Conor was out running some errands with Kit, in hopes of getting her out of the house. Leaving Andie alone with little man, who was not pleased he couldn’t watch oomi zoomies or paw patrol yet because Daddy had yet to go yell at the cable company. Guess what was first on Conor’s stop list…
Instead, the tiny terror was making a mess in the living room. The first room they’d finished unpacking, and Andie had let him have free reign of the empty boxes so he could play in. Children and their imaginations right?
Andie was singing softly to herself, thinking about some chapters in her upcoming book when there was a knock on the door. Out of reflex she froze. Her heart starting to beat loudly as she leaned forward on the kitchen counter to look around the wall, and see where Eli was at. He’d stopped in his playing as he’d heard the knock and climbed to his feet, starting to move towards the door. “Ah ah!” Andie called, immediately dropping the small stack of plates down. The ceramic clattered to the counter as she rushed up behind Eli, grabbing his arm and pulling him back. “Momma needs to get it.” She whispered gently to him. Pulling Eli back behind her. “Knock knock?” Eli asked, and pointed at the door.
“Yep, Knock knock.” She whispered, running a hand through his dark auburn hair before she moved to the door. Using the peephole to see who was there. She didn’t recognized the blond woman, and from the basket she carried Andie wondered if she was just being overly paranoid. Conor had grown up here. It was a sanctuary of sorts for the types. Father couldn’t find them here.
Right?
She wiped her hands over her capri’s, taking a deep breath as she tucked some dark brown strands behind her ears, and then opened up the door. Pasting a bright smile on her face. “Well hello,”

"Hi, Andie, right? I'm Cassie's mom, Maria Faulkner. Our girls met a couple of days ago?" Maria smiled and held up her basket. "I don't know if Kit remembered to tell you that I bring over gifts for all the new witches in town. Just our way of making sure people feel welcome here."
The brunette was younger than Maria, obviously, but not a child, at least. She must have had her daughter fairly young, whereas Maria had waited and planned very carefully for her pregnancy, seeing as there wasn't anyone else to make the decision for her. Maria's gaze dropped to the little boy who was peeking around his mother's legs, and her polite smile was replaced with a gentler one as she dropped easily into a crouch in spite of the fact she was wearing heels. Just because she didn't want more children of her own didn't mean she didn't like them or know how to handle them--quite the contrary, she always enjoyed spending some time with the children of the coven to give the grown witches some time to care for themselves. She just didn't need them around all the time. Cassie was plenty of mess and stress on her own, thank you.
"Well hello, little one! Cassie didn't tell me there was a little cutie like you around!" She waved to him. "My name is Maria. What's your name?"

It quickly donned on Andie who this woman was. Kit had mentioned a Cassie, and she’d gotten that text a couple days ago when Kit had gone to hang out with a few a of the neighborhood kids. She was glad her daughter was making new friends. She certainly needed it.
“Ah, yes Kit mentioned meeting her and a Nolan?” She asked for clarification before she was holding her hand out to shake. “Andie Grey.” She said with a small smile, trying ot get herself to become less tense, but it was a force of habit. At the mention of the basket, Andie blinked a bit in surprise. Not accustomed to the gesture, but she was touched by it.
“Well thank you! It’s a nice surprise.” she said. At that moment Maria was crouching down at Eli’s level, and Andie looked down and over at her son, hovering behind her as he gripped her pant leg. He wasn’t used to people, having only been around his parents and sister since he’d been born. Something Andie felt bad about as Eli was already three and hadn’t really been socialized. But if he was anything his father, it hopefully wouldn’t be an issue.
As Marie talked to Eli, Andie could see the gears turning his head trying to make up his decision as to what he might do. Her hand hand came down to rest on the top of his head to let him know it was alright, however he was deciding to be more shy as he hid behind his mother. “This is Elijah.” Andie introduced him to Maria for him. “We’re a bit shy.” She said smiling at the woman. “Would you like to come in? We’re still unpacking so you’ll have to excuse some of the mess.” Andie asked, hooking a thumb over her shoulder. She was curious about the witches in this town, and If Maria was one, then maybe she could give her some insight.
“Tea? Coffee?” She asked, turning scooping Eli up under his armpits as she lifted him up and put him on her hip. She held him close while she stepped aside, letting the Maria into the house. She’d find for the most part, the living room was unpacked and there were empty boxes that Eli had drawn with crayons over and was playing with, while the kitchen table was up but was covered in boxes that still needed unboxed as well as some boxes on the counter that were at least open. The Coffee pot and kettle at least had already found there homes and were ready for use.

Maria's gaze lifted to Andie as she answered for her son, and she nodded in understanding. She didn't intend to frighten either of them, but she'd certainly noticed the wariness in Andie's energy. Fair enough--she guessed they must be moving to Xander's Cross looking for sanctuary from some outside persecution. She was glad she'd never been put in that position.
She rose smoothly to her feet at the offer to come in. "A cup of tea would be lovely, thank you," she agreed, following mother and child into the house. She caught the door behind her and closed it since Andie's hands were full.
"As for the mess, you're absolutely excused, dear. Moving is an ordeal for everyone. If you need an extra set of hands or two, I'm sure that Cassie and Nolan would be willing to help get things cleaned up. And I'm always taking donations of clean cardboard and other burnables as starters for our ceremonial fires if you need someone to get those out of your way when you're through with them."
She eyed the tasteful decor in the living room along with the clever use of cardboard boxes as a coloring material for the little one. Yes, she liked this one; she seemed intelligent and sensible. As they reached the kitchen, she cast around for an empty bit of counter but wound up setting her basket of things on top of the unopened boxes to avoid stealing Andie's little workable space. "There are cookies in the basket, too, if you'd like a snack with your tea. Just a light comfort charm on them; I get them from the Secret Ingredient bakery in town. Sweet Corinne is always happy to make the newcomers something that will make the new house feel like a home." She gestured around her. "It can be a bit foreign feeling at first, I always think. Needs to be lived in."
She hoped the blatant reference to the comfort charm as well as the remark about Corinne would make her hostess feel a bit more at ease speaking openly about magic. She was more than happy to answer any questions Andie might have, and would rather that she ask, in fact. She always felt a bit heavy-handed launching into a speech about her coven and the town unprompted--like a bad informercial. She didn't want to leave that kind of a bad taste in anyone's mouth.
