He was far from a loser. A loner, maybe, but he liked it that way. He preferred it that way, honestly, except for a select few friends. And yes, he had those, and no, he didn't include Paige in that group despite how interesting she turned out to be. Cal had his rules and was going to obey them.
Funnily enough, though, he was going to need to act buddy-buddy because he needed her help. And he wasn't really sure how to approach this subject. He wondered if she would find it amusing or not.
As for the exam, he tried to make it quick. It was different than the last time, certainly, and there was a familiarity between them that hadn't been there before. What he needed to concentrate on was making sure she was healed, and that he didn't accidentally step over the line into another territory. He barely realized that he was purposely not breathing, maybe as an attempt to keep her scent from invading his senses.
"Good," he told her, looking sidelong to her with some knowing glint in his eye when she mentioned that he could call her mother. He wondered if Brenda had been dragging her out on walks like he had suggested. "Well, you look good, and you seem good." Cal stepped away, backtracking to the counter with her record. "I'd say you're alright to go. Don't overdo it, but resume activity as normal." For a second, he couldn't help but think back on what her mother had said, and he knew that if it was up to him, he wouldn't clear her for active duty. Her body might've been healing, but he wasn't so sure about her mind...

Paige was pretty quiet while Cal did the exam, doing what he needed of her and she tried to make things easy on him even if his touch set her skin ablaze. Damn, what was it about this guy? Maybe it was the familiarity they now had, but that soon? He really was going to turn her into a puddle.
She was relieved when the exam was finally over, and she found herself actually letting a deep breath slowly out as he went to the counter. She watched him in anticipation to see what he’d have to say, and she found she was holding her breath while she waited for either good news or bad news.
And the words that came from him, had her jumping off the exam table in one hop. “Yeeeesssssssssssssssss!,” She held her arms out in front of her, punching the air as she went into a short lunge. The glee and delight practically vibrating off her as she straightened up, and the smile that lit up her face could light a whole building.
Finally, Life was going to be returning to normal. She could feel it, the restlessness was going to end, the night terrors because she couldn’t go out and run, the hopeless feelings she felt at not being able to do what she normally could…
She could Dance again, and just knowing that nearly brought tears to her eyes. The thing she loved to do most, was finally within her reach. She even did her own little happy wiggle as she practically bounced over to the door. “No overdoing it, got it.” She said with a salute. And because she couldn’t help herself, she raised her brows at him. “Ya know if you ever want to go to the diner again, I promise not to play twenty questions of life again.” She said with a grin. Can’t get rid of me that easily, Hunt. She thought.
Her hand was already opening up the door and she could hear Blake coming out of an exam room on the opposite side of the hallway. She stopped before she was fully out the door, realizing she was practically rushing out, but Cal had practically just made her day. Even if she had a shift at the hardware store, Paige wanted to get out of there so time would speed up and she’d be on her and Louis’ trip. She quickly glanced over her shoulder at Cal, “Anything else I should do, or need to do?” She asked with a raised brow.

Blake had just gotten done wiping down the exam room he'd been in with a patient. Humming to himself as he threw away the paper sheet they had over the exam tables before laying out another one. He picked up the patient's chart then, adjusting his stethoscope that was around his neck, as he opened the door to see the tail end of a blond ponytail. He could see feminine hands gripping the side of the door way, and he could hear a feminine voice asking who he could only assume was Cal a question. He started to make his way past the doorway, when get did a small glance, and his feet faltered. Realizing it was Paige Anderson that Cal was seeing, and since she was looking over her shoulder at Cal, Blake looked over her head at his Best friend. Arching a questioning brow at him, before a lopsided grin appeared on his face, and he waggled his brows at Cal.
To be an ass, or to not be an ass? That was the question. Still, if Paige and Cal were seeing each other, he had to make sure the lady had his best friend's good intentions at heart. Blake didn't know all the details to Shan and Cal's split, but he knew it had to do with their little girl, and as far as he knew Cal hadn't given anyone the time of day. Blake might have been rushing things considering it was one Dinner, and he couldn't even call it that, but she was the first person he had intended to have dinner with right? That meant something.
"All done here, Cal?" Blake asked nonchalantly. His eyes flickering back to Paige, who was turning around to look at him. "I don't think we properly met last time, Blake Carson." Blake quickly introduced himself. Even if her and Cal weren't a thing, she was a resident of XC, and they were bound to cross paths again. "Paige Anderson, Nice to meet ya Doc." Paige said with a grin, and Blake's only widened. "Yes it is, Your Mom told me you were gonna be home on her last visit, you enjoying being home so far?" He asked her curiously, a glint of mischief entered his blue eyes as they flickered up to Cal, and he had a look on his face that he knew all to well that they were both enjoying her being home.

Despite himself, he let out a laugh at seeing her sudden excitement, quite obviously happy to receive the good news. And he would have told her to wait if he really thought she needed it. Now, hopefully she wouldn't push it. "But if you begin to feel any ache or pain, slow down, alright?" he warned, as he casually slipped the pen behind his ear.
Before he knew it, Paige was already dismissing herself even though he hadn't actually said the appointment was over. Cal didn't seem to stop her, though, just leaning there against the counter with an amused look on his face. She wasn't going to stop, was she? Once she knew things could go back to normal, she was ready to just run right out of there.
And he was about to just let her.
'Ya know if you ever want to go to the diner again...'
"Uh huh," he murmured, as if he didn't believe that she wouldn't drill him again. Cal didn't say yes but didn't say no, and as she was asking another question with that door open, he caught Blake on the other side being a dumbass.
Shit, that's right. Alright, it was time to up the game and pray Paige didn't skewer him before she understood what the hell was going on. This wasn't entirely a situation he could win- because he was lying about something he was very intent on not doing, and his friend was aware of that. But because Blake wouldn't take the truth about a single dinner, he wasn't going to understand why he wasn't pursuing Paige Anderson. It was a vicious cycle that he didn't know how to break yet.
"Of course she is," he answered for Paige, and the tone of his voice was quite the opposite of what it had been just moments ago. It had dropped dangerously, and not in a venomous way. She'd feel his presence behind her as his arm snaked around, his palm pressing against her stomach. Cal's head dipped near her ear and his voice was so quiet that Blake wouldn't hear, but her wolfish hearing would have no problem, "Play along. I'll explain."
"She was just on her way out." He was urging Paige slowly out that door as he followed, keeping her pressed against his chest before throwing a smartass smirk over to Blake.

So this was the human that Cal had claimed as his pack. And from what he’d told her, it was just Blake. Paige assessed Blake with those green eyes, finding his smile charming almost instantly as they shook hands and her arms fell at her side. She arched her brows in surprise as he mentioned her mom, but then she really shouldn’t be surprised now should she? Brenda was a talker. She actually thought it was a bit sweet Ma had been telling people she was coming home, but at the same time she dreaded it. It meant questions she didn’t want to answer.
She opened her mouth to say she was enjoying being home when suddenly Cal was answering for her and not in a tone she had expected. It was low, gravely, and dangerous and it sent a chill down her spine. She had started to turn to face him, but found she couldn’t as he was suddenly snaking an arm around her waist and her eyes shot open in surprise.
Well hello Hunt, what are you doing? She suddenly thought. She opened her mouth to ask what he was doing, but his head was dipped down next to hers, whispering to her so low Blake couldn’t hear.
Play along? With what?
She found she didn’t have to ask “How” as she quickly got the hint that whatever they were playing at, was with heavy implication to something that probably involved a bed with messed up sheets as she felt his chest suddenly pressed against her back.
Holy Fuck, She thought as his scent flooded her senses. Paige nearly puddled right there. The ride on the motorcycle had felt nothing like this when she was the one behind him. With him behind her? Her skin felt like it was primed with an electrical current, and she wondered if he could feel how surprisingly relaxed she was against him. Practically melting into him.
Safe. It hit her as he urged her forward. She hadn’t felt actually safe in a long ass time, and the shock hit her like a truck. She had to steady herself by placing one hand over Cal’s on her stomach and the other reaching back to grab his hip. A small intake of breath sounded before she stepped into whatever role he needed her to be.
She leaned her head back against Cal’s shoulder, glancing up at him through her lashes, as a coy smile spread across her face. Catching the tale end of his smirk at Blake. “Uuuuuuunfortuantely.” She sighed. “Some of us have to work.” She said coolly. Adding her own form of pay back as to whatever Cal had just dragged her into. She leaned more back against Cal and then glanced at Blake as if to prove a point. “Try and keep him busy won’t you, Doc? Someone’s distracted." And he’s got some major explaining to do later… She wanted to add.

Blake watched as Cal came up behind Paige, and his eyebrows arched up. Despite Cal’s smartass smirk, Blake was grinning like the fool he was. Unaware he was being played like a fiddle. He could only assume Paige’s initial reaction was because Blake was present, but he noted she didn’t let it bother her any. In fact, they looked quite the pair snuggled up there as Cal was clearly going to see her out.
At Paige’s request, Blake actually laughed. “I think I can keep him plenty busy, don’t worry about that.” He assured her. His bright blues flickered over to Cal, as his own shit-eating grin spread across his face. It was clear Blake was happy for him. There was no denying the genuine look in Blake’s eyes. “If he’s lucky, the day will go by quick for him. Or, I’ll be the lucky one and he’ll have to suffer through a slow day.” He added.

Blake was definitely his pack. Cameron could be considered a part of it, of course, but the boy already had his own pack...not that that would stop Cal from protecting him if it ever came down to it. He adored that damn kid.
And right now, that sole pack member was testing him, causing Cal to lie and do some very stupid shit. He was pretty certain that this wasn't what Paige had been implying when she mentioned friendship, and he was dragging her right under the bus with him immediately.
But Blake couldn't win. The damn human was going to see how quickly this woman "dumped him", and how much it didn't matter, and that Cal was just going to move right on along with his life like nothing had changed. He was almost adamant about it and just wanted things to go back to normal.
The shitty thing was, he felt Paige tense up in her surprise, and there was something else there he couldn't really explain, or he simply refused to acknowledge it. But her scent hit him like a tidal wave, heavier than usual and it had nothing to do with their proximity. It was different and he was teetering on that line of, well...liking it when her entire body seemed to relax against him, like this was normal. He heard that quick intake of breath, causing his fingers to involuntarily curl just a little into the fabric of her shirt against the flat of her stomach.
This is so fucking unprofessional, dude, he was inwardly scolding himself, drawing himself out of that sudden moment. But Blake's expression made it nearly worth it, and Paige didn't hesitate anymore to go along with this ridiculous mess.
"Some of us? Not sure I appreciate the sass, Anderson..." he said, trying to gather his wits about him before she was addressing Blake and making it worse. Cal dramatically rolled his eyes at all of it, but that genuine look of happiness on his buddy's face made him suddenly feel guilty. He nearly dropped the act right then and there.
Afraid to say anything further, lest it give him away, the wolf simply ushered Paige out of the room and down the hall, where he eventually drifted to her side to take her hand, leading her to the door. He was seconds away from trying to quickly shove her out of the clinic but held himself back. His back to Blake, he leaned in as if he was going to kiss her, but that definitely was a big no. Instead, he just whispered quickly, "I'll explain later. Promise." And before she could say or do anything else, he was already turning away from her to get back to work.
Or slack off, as it were.

“You like my sass and you know it.” Paige fired right back at Cal on instinct. Banter she could do everyday all day, and she merely grinned up at him before he started to usher her along again. “Nice meeting you Blake!” She called over her shoulder. “Yeah you too!!!” Blake called after.
Paige let Cal move her a bit more until they were out of the room, and then his hand was taking hers. She kept her head foreward for the most part, sensing that Blake was still watching them. Her eyes glanced sidelong up at Cal however. Wondering what was going on, and why they were suddenly acting this way. She stood in front of the door, glancing up to see Cal leaning in as if he was about to kiss her and she froze. Looking like a deer in a headlight. Oooooooooh boy, you best be putting those breaks on, or I can not be responsible for my next actions… She thought.
Thankfully a smooch from the hot doc didn’t happen, but her heart was still racing as if he had. She blinked the surprise away and it turned to curiosity as he whispered to her. “You better,” She growled lowly. Unable to to help herself. It wasn’t so much in a threatening manner, but he should know by now if he didn’t seek her out to get an answer, she certainly would.
She watched him turn and leave then, returning to work as if what had just happened had been nothing. A look of wonder was still on face before she smiled and wiggled her fingers at Blake who seemed to be making some sort of joke before she started to walk down the street. Remembering the fact she was clear for more activity, she let the excitement of her night activity boost her mood.
