Josie perked up at the name. Edmund! That was a start, at least. She knew the date range and the name...surely there weren't many young children named Edmund? Such a serious name for a young child...it suited the situation, she thought. But the mayor had been smart. He'd kept it all cryptic, verbal or veiled threats. That way if Lauren tried to fight back, she had no proof. She could be written off as a hysterical woman, like so many before her. What a disgusting tactic.
Josie sighed tersely through her nose. "What a twisted man."
She'd been hoping for more physical proof, but it seemed like this was the best they were going to get for now. She was definitely going to need more information. She'd start with research on her own, see what she could dig up, but this might call for some outside help. She knew a few people on the dark web (she'd worked a case that needed it when she was an intern), but she might also need a private investigator, someone who could go in person to track this adoptive family. Did they even know the child they were raising was stolen?
"Alright," she began again, pulling herself back into professional mode again. "I'll get to work on this. Can you wait a bit longer to go to the police? At least a couple of days? I'd like to put together a packet for them, with what we have and everything else I can find on the mayor, these photos, anything. If we're going to make you a suspect, I'd like to also provide reasonable doubt right off the bat."
