Rosalie was on the sofa with a bowl of popcorn in hand, absolutely engrossed in a documentary about the molestation scandal at Michigan State when the doorbell rang. It was a morbid topic, but she couldn't get enough of this kind of story. The victims coming forward, the evidence... She liked to see the mistakes the authorities had made before, and how the right person could catch a criminal. Someday, she'd be that person. "I'll get it!" she sang out to the rest of the house as she hopped to her feet, even though it was just her and mom home. She set her popcorn on the coffee table and hurried to the door, white socks sliding on dark hardwood floors. She swung the door open and flipped her hair out of her face so she could see who was there, and beamed when she saw it was Jalen Seong, Reagan's boyfriend. And of course, he looked perfect, as usual, even on a summer day with no one to impress except Reagan, who'd love him even if he showed up in a brown paper bag. It was almost unfair. She was still more than a little upset with herself that she hadn't made a move before her sister and Jalen stumbled into this relationship with each other. By accident! Accident! And yet they were 'made for each other.' Listening to her sister talk about how perfect they were and how they were going to get married and have a house with a white picket fence made Rose want to claw her eyeballs out, but she kept that to herself. She'd never do anything to hurt Reagan like that, and besides, it was her own fault for not saying something. For now, she'd just focus on being a good friend and sister to Jalen, too. And that meant welcoming him into their home like a good hostess. "Hi Jay! C'mon in. Reagan's not back from taking the ACT yet, but she should be home soon. I just started a documentary if you wanna join me--I've got popcorn, and there's Coke in the fridge." She moved out of the way and gestured grandly for him to come in.

At least someone seemed to be in a good mood. Jalen simply thought about driving, just driving anywhere and not stopping until he cooled off, until he could think straight. However, it seemed that once he got in the car, his instincts told him to go to the Potter household.
He was frustrated- no, it was borderline angry because of his father. Just when he thought things between them were getting better, Jin Seong would say something or expect something so ridiculous of his son, and it would bring them back to square one. To that misery and questionable existence without Atepa around. It had been years since she died, and yet her death still affected them both greatly.
Running fingers through that black hair, wanting to pull on the loose curls, the door opened. It wasn't Reagan's smiling face greeting him, but one of her sisters. Still, it seemed to bring him down a notch and away from that boiling point. Rosalie was always nice to be around.
"Oh, right...that was today," he murmured mostly to himself as Rose mentioned the ACT. He had forgotten. He felt like he was forgetting a lot of things as of late. Blinking, he stepped inside with a nod of thanks before trying to focus his mind on something, anything else. Fingers went through his hair again like a nervous habit. "Documentary?" Sure, let's focus on that. "What about?"

Rose caught on fast that this wasn't just a visit for fun--or if it was, something had ruined it before Jalen reached the door. He was acting like an escaped convict or something, the way he was shifting uncomfortably and pulling on his hair. She could think of a lot better reasons to pull that hair, but she pushed that out of her head as she closed the door behind him and headed for the kitchen to get him a pop. He needed something to keep his hands busy if she was going to work on calming him down.
The glass bottles in the case clinked as she tugged one out and popped the cap off expertly using the edge of the marble counter. The fizz inside hissed and steamed as she held that one to Jalen and pulled out another for herself.
"It's about the gymnasts over at Michigan State. The athletics doctor they had there was all famous, even worked with Olympic athletes. Only it turns out he was abusing all of them." She realized after she'd explained enthusiastically that what she'd just said would sound terrible to most people. She winced. "I like true crime where they get the bad guy. It's reassuring, you know? Justice." She shrugged one shoulder as she headed for the living room.
She flopped into the armchair sideways with her long, freckled legs dangling over the arm. "I can pick something different if you want. What do you like to watch? You don't really seem like the type to just watch explosions with no plot."

He was almost lost as he slowly followed her towards the kitchen, lingering in the doorway. Before he knew it, there was a soda bottle being held out to him. Jalen took it with another gentle "thanks"; blinking those dark eyes to try and focus. His father wasn't here, so it shouldn't matter anymore.
But, of course it did. It always mattered.
'It's about the gymnasts over at Michigan State.'
Rosalie was explaining, sounding like she was really into it, and he couldn't help but look confused by her enthusiasm. That is, until she confessed she liked true crime. Alright, that made her sound a little less crazy, and he even smirked about it while he followed her to the living room. "Me? Just...sports mostly." In which he didn't sound entirely thrilled about. "And maybe those movies of just explosions with no plot," he added in a bit of a joke, even if it was somewhat true. Sometimes you just needed something mindless to put on, and half of those Fast and the Furious movies were exactly that.
He gently sat on the edge of the couch. "You were already watchin' this, leave it on." Hell, maybe he'd find it intriguing himself, and this was her house anyhow. "I'll admit, didn't pin you for a documentary girl of any kind." That probably didn't sound like much of a compliment as he had intended it to be. In truth, he kind of thought she'd be watching shit like the Kardashians, Below Deck, or whatever those shows were. Most of the popular girls did, so he had less in common with them.
Not that he had any clue about Rose's tastes, either. It was "smart" and "intellectual", and he probably shouldn't have been surprised. She was a Potter.

Rose squinted at him, though a smile still lingered on her lips, softening her suspicion playfully. Just sports and explosions, huh? If he said so. She didn't buy it, though. He looked so damn serious when he didn't think anyone was paying attention--there was more than sports and explosions going on in there.
"I'll admit, didn't pin you for a documentary girl of any kind."
"That's the point," Rose returned with a growing smile and a quick wink. "I've got an image to uphold for the masses." It sounded like a play, but she wasn't kidding. Life was a lot easier when everyone just assumed you were vapid and shallow. And they liked you a lot better, to boot. Hm. Maybe that same thing was the reason for the sports stuff, huh? Her nose scrunched for a moment in her amusement. Maybe they had more in common than she thought. She reached for the remote, but rather than start the movie up again, she twirled the remote contemplatively between her hands. She didn't think of Jalen as just part of the crowd--she was willing to let him in a little deeper.
"I can trust you to keep my secret, can't I?" She asked with wide eyes as she raised the remote to tap her lower lip.

Wasn't there always something underneath the mask for everyone? Some more than others, he supposed. Jalen always thought he knew who he was and what he was going to do with life, until he realized it was what his father wanted. Sure, he loved football, but was it everything?
'That's the point.'
His attention shifted back over to her, unable to suppress the smile her own seemed to bring out of him. What she said next, though, was where his expression faltered, and he huffed out a barely audible sarcastic laugh. "Right. And that's exhausting, isn't it?" he asked without stopping to think about the words leaving his mouth. Jalen just leaned back against the couch in a lazy slouch, fingers filtering through his hair again in mild frustration.
"What? That you're weirdly obsessed with criminal justice?" he asked, and he was clearly teasing about it. It wasn't weird, not really. "Sure."

"Right. And that's exhausting, isn't it?"
Ugh, no fucking kidding. He definitely got it. She nodded, trying once again to ignore the habit he had of playing with his hair. That was going to be trouble, she could feel it. Or maybe this would be like exposure therapy? If she hung around him more, got used to it, maybe she wouldn't think about touching it every time.
"What? That you're weirdly obsessed with criminal justice?" he asked, and he was clearly teasing about it. It wasn't weird, not really. "Sure."
Rose laughed and shook her head. He got part of it, but he didn't know how deep it went. She was kind of enjoying this, finally giving away what was going on behind the scenes. Just a peek behind the curtain.
"You're not wrong, but that's not it. I'm going to be an FBI agent someday. I'll be the one out there, doing the work, bringing down guys like this," she gestured to the TV where Larry Nassar's face was frozen in an expression of dismay. "People who take advantage of good people, who ruin their lives. I'm going to stop them." Genuine passion colored her voice, along with a steely certainty. She meant every word of it. She was going to make it happen.
She looked back to him, emerald eyes shining. "That's the secret. I let people think I'm just another pretty face, like cotton candy, all sugar and air. They don't know I'm tougher than that." She raised a brow. "But now you do."

In truth, he was trying to be what his father expected him to be. Sometimes, Jalen wondered who he really was, who he would be if he were to do everything his own way. It was in these moments that he understood why Chogan acted out so much.
His head lazily turned as he leaned there against the back of the couch when she laughed. Jay always noticed how the triplets looked similar, would act similarly in certain regards, but right now? Right now, Rose was looking different. She was showing that she was her own person and not just a part of the famous redheaded trio. It was endearing, and he envied it...and there he was, with no sibling competition to contend with and he was still so lost.
His brow rose in surprise. "FBI?" he echoed. The admiration seemed to grow a little, and Jalen didn't bother trying to hide the impressed look on his face, grinning widely. "Yeah, but...that's badass. Why wouldn't you want people to know that?" At least, to him, it would just make her that much more popular.
Then again, one never truly understood the populace at Hartman High.

Eeee! He thought she was badass! Rosalie's cheeks flushed a little as she smiled brightly at him.
"Well, it's nice to have something that's mine, for one. But on top of that, it's not..." she paused, tapping the remote against her lips again as she looked for the right word. She couldn't quite find the one she wanted. "It's not feminine, sorta? It's not cute. It's not what people want from a pretty cheerleader in high school. It doesn't fit the perfect little picture with the short skirts and red solo cups. So I don't make noise about it. Riss, Rea, and me, we're a unit. We're the popular girls. We worked hard to get that way. I'm not about to mess it up by boxing on the weekends and geeking out about criminal law." She laughed. "I'd be just as bad as the kids who get all starry-eyed talking about chemistry. Nobody wants to hear that."
It was hard to explain, but the way she was at school, and out with her 'friends' was mostly an act. She did have fun with them, of course, but she put a lot of thought into acting just right, smiling just right, laughing just hard enough at Todd's jokes. It was like posing for an Instagram photo, everything just so, and covered with a filter. She fully believed that the best way to get what she wanted, the best way to be happy, was to keep those around her believing she was perfect, effortless.

He got it, he really did. Of course, he was likely only popular because he played sports and was pretty damn good at football, but he kind of got the feeling that the Potter triplets were on an entirely different level. They demanded your attention, and to be quite honest, if Reagan hadn't begun to tutor him, he may have steered clear of them all. He might have been more popular now because he was dating Reagan, he wasn't oblivious to that fact.
Jalen watched and listened as Rose attempted to explain, and again, he understood, but at the same time, he was still wondering why? High school politics, that's why. And he really had no room to judge when he claimed he would rebel against his father and his wishes, only to do exactly as the man wanted. Every single time.
'Nobody wants to hear that.'
A shrug, he was responding immediately and without a care in the world. "I mean, I would." Certain things. Maybe not chemistry, mathematics, or the like, but this FBI stuff for sure. "But hey-" Jalen began, turning a little on the couch as he continued to lazily lounge there, facing her a bit more. "Buffy was feminine, a cheerleader with the short skirts...and she slayed vampires. Just sayin'." He smirked, rather pleased with himself on that one.

He would want to hear her get excited about criminal law and old cases and true crime? Seriously?
Don't get excited. Don't get excited. Don't get excited.
Too late.
It was a good thing she had a lot of practice keeping her cool under pressure, or she might have landed herself in hot water. How in the hell was it that this boy had ended up dating Rea? Did he like listening to her talk about her interests too? She couldn't decide if she hoped he did or that he didn't. She wanted Rea to be happy, of course she did, but did it have to be with this boy in particular?
"Hey, you've got a point, there, she answered with a warm smile. "Unfortunately I haven't made it to the monster-slaying part of the training just yet. Mostly laws and psychology, for now. But I am learning a little bit of kickboxing through youtube." She held up her fingers to demonstrate that it was really, very very little. She could really use a coach to help her with her form, but at least she could get started on the basics from home.

He liked Reagan (obviously), but at times he often wondered where they were going. More like, he wasn't really sure he saw them going much of anywhere further. It wasn't that he didn't care about her, because despite the jock stereotypes and his habit of picking on "the little guy" when his patience was running thin, he sometimes felt like they didn't fit. Not completely, anyway. Usually, Jalen just chalked that up to being too tired from practice or his father's nagging wearing him thin, and then would promptly ignore it.
Maybe he shouldn't.
Rea was dealing with a lot with preparing for college and the upcoming senior year, and Jay didn't want to make it more stressful. She was a comfort to him, took care of him without him needing to ask, and he wanted to be able to be that kind of presence in return.
Why was it so hard sometimes?
"Eh, you'll get there," he said jokingly before turning his attention over to the television to be lost in thought. "Kickboxing, huh? That's pretty cool. I always wanted to learn something, like tae kwon do. But 'that won't get me far'..." The sudden inflection in his voice likely signified he was quoting his father. "Don't have much time for anything else anyway."
Wow, that sounded like a poor excuse, didn't it?

Rose watched his face change as he seemed to be thinking about someone else. She had a hunch it was his dad--the guy was wound up tighter than the strings on a violin, and ready to snap like one, too. She imagined a violin string breaking and cutting the face of the violinist. Or was it piano wire that did that?
He wanted to learn tae kwon do? That was cool. She liked the way tae kwon do seemed to be more about control, and less about winning. But then, she also really, really liked winning. She was surprised to hear him say he didn't have time, though. He had always seemed like he made time for fun, not just for school work.
"Well they have competitions and stuff if you really need to show that you're 'the best'" She put air quotes around the words. "Plus there's scaled belts to show that you're improving." She realized she was info-dumping, and probably sounded like a cheap Reagan knock-off. "I mean, I looked into it before I did kickboxing. It seemed pretty cool." Lame, lame, lame, Rose. You sound like a total dork.

Jalen only knew how to win. It was all he was allowed to do. The problem he had was his lack of control on his own life. And every time he thought to stand up to his father, all he could think about were his mother's words, the way she always defended the man. That he "only wanted what was best for him", so on and so forth. Thus, he would just cave.
"Yeah, pretty cool..." he echoed, his eyes still on the TV. It probably appeared like he had zoned out and stopped listening, but it was quite the opposite. If he was tuning out, it was into his own head because it was filled with nothing but confused thoughts nonstop.
Finally, he blinked, and turned those brown eyes back to her. "Which is why you should be attending classes that aren't on YouTube." Just because he didn't have time, didn't mean she didn't. To him, learning to kickbox wouldn't hurt her image, it would just improve it. But then again, he really didn't understand some of the minds at school.
