If you asked Paige, last night hadn’t happened. She hadn’t gone to the bar, ran into the hot doc that had become her “project”, and then proceeded to get into a bar fight with her best friends ex boyfriend over the fact he’d crossed the line. The icing on the cake was the nightmares, and Corinne’s poor (though rather attractive) mechanic neighbor charging in to the rescue thinking the apartment had an intruder due to Paige’s blood curlding scream.
Nah, totally didn’t happen.
Just like she wasn’t avoiding home either. Corinne had been more then kind enough let Paige clean up, and borrow a shirt. Paige didn’t care one iota if the t-shirt was a bit large on her, she compensated by tucking the front of it into the waste band of her shorts. After breakfast with her best friend, she’d decided to procrastinate at Louis’ and see just who he’d stood her up for.
She walked from the bakery to garden view, enjoying the exercise and looking at her, you wouldn’t expect her to have been the mess she was last night. Hell, she even had a pep in her step as she walked up the driveway, leather jacket in hand, before opened the front door and invited herself in. Given the fact this was her twins house, there were certain protocols that didn’t apply to her. Like knocking.
“Lou!” She hollered the moment the crossed the doorway. Putting her leather jacket on the coat rack she started towards the kitchen, as the living room was empty. “What in the chocolate fudge sundae happened to you??” His voice sounded from the doorway. Paige halted seeing him come into view, she froze, though his choice of curse words made her roll her lips under her teeth to stop from laughing. He only averted swear words when children were present or in his care, so she could only assume little ears were present.
The look soon faded however, as Louis’ face was one that reminded her of their father. He had that concerned Paige… look nearly mastered. She didn’t want to think about why she was getting that look, and decided to pretend like she didn’t know. She looked down at her shirt, and then glanced behind her, as if he was giving that look to someone else. “What?” She asked innocently. “What?” He mocked. “Is there a reason why dad called me bright and early to ask why you were in jail? Last night?” He asked. She felt a icy trickle go down her spine at the words. Word certainly traveled fast…
She puffed out a loud sigh and rolled her eyes, starting to walk towards him. “I was let out like twenty minutes later, no big deal.” She waved it off. Louis’ face turned more concerned and his arms tightened across his chest. “What happened P? Seriously, You promised to stay out of trouble, I thought you actually meant that.” He pointed out. She chewed on her bottom lip, looking around it seemed like the house was still quiet with sleeping children. She looked at Louis, aside from Corinne, this was the person that had been her first bestfriend. They’d shared a womb and had a bond that only twins knew. She knew he knew she wasn’t okay, but Louis also wasn’t the sort to push if you weren’t ready. She could see he was struggling with it though, and no doubt dad had also told him about all her other problems. The night terrors, the conversation he’d over heard at the store with the therapist, now this…
“Keith Peltz happened. He bad mouthed Corinne, and he got under my skin. I tried walking away first.” And then he called you names… She didn’t add. Not wanting Louis to worry more. She shrugged her shoulders. “I was defending my bestie’s honor.” Lou relaxed, letting a small sigh out. As if he’d been worried it had been something more serious, but then he was waving her over, and she automatically walked forward. Felling him pull her into a hug. “I guess that’s acceptable.” He murmured. She actually laughed then and as she hugged him tight. Resting her head on his chest while she listened to the steady rhythm of his heart beat. “You guess?” She asked tilted her head up at him. “Yeah well, it was for honor and all, and my romantic nerd heart can’t resist it.” He grinned. Paige let out a louder laugh then. “Ooookay Nerd man, where are these puppies you stood me up for huh? Are they cute and cuddly?” She asked, as the twins pulled themselves out of each others arms. It was Louis’s turn to laugh, but it was more of a tired chuckle. “One’s got claws, and i’m pretty sure the other two are part energizer bunny.” He said scratching the back of his head. He motioned towards the kitchen then and she started to follow, coming around him to see a baby that must have barely been over one sitting up in a high chair, making what looked like apple sauce art on the tray.
Paige’s eyes instantly lit up, and her chest flooded with warmth. “Cute cuddly, baybaaay!!!” She exclaimed quietly with a gasp as she started making her approach. Her blonde hair was pulled back into a ponytail and it fell over her shoulder as she leaned slightly down in front of the highchair, and waved. “Haaai honey, aren’t you a cutie,” She cooed. The baby looked up at her curiously before sucking on his hand that had some of the apple sauce. “That’s Chidi, he’s got two big sisters and a brother. I’m surprised they’re not up yet.” Louis said, moving to the sink to continue what he’d been doing before Paige showed up which was cutting up fruit.
“They’re probably exhausted from all the excitement yesterday,” She pointed out. It was tiring being in a strange new place. She knew the feeling all too well, but she had other stressful things to think about too. She smiled widely at Chidi before she looked over to Louis who was handing her a small kiddy bowl clearly met for the baby. She pulled up a chair next to the high chair and then picked up a small, diced piece of grape and held it out to him.
