The fact that she hadn't drawn away from him was making it even harder to ignore the erratic beat of his heart, the warmth he felt just from the touch of her fingers over his own. It was this electrical current, a magnet wanting to pull him even closer despite not understanding what was happening.
This wasn't like him- he was usually so very careful. Had he already forgotten everything that had been drilled into his memory from a young age just from being away from the coven a couple of days? Right now, in that very moment, it felt like a lifetime- the manor now something of the past, burnt to ash, and he didn't care about it anymore.
Marcus realized he had been holding his breath, waiting for her to speak. You're not him, she whispered, and some new expression washed over his face suddenly before he could stop it. His brow furrowed softly in a sadness he couldn't explain, but there was a hope, an understanding of what she meant; speaking words that did little to ease the thrumming inside his chest.
And he didn't want it to stop.
Still, for a single heartbeat in that moment of almost disbelief, he wanted to tell her that there was a time where he was just like her father, that maybe a part of him still was. His original plan had been to betray her, something he had immediately told Thornton...and then, all of a sudden, everything had changed. He wanted to tell her everything, yet couldn't seem to utter a word of it.
Isolde was speaking his name, and the sound of her voice had him bringing his eyes back up to her immediately. 'You're not him.' Her words echoed again and his face softened a little bit more; his other hand lifted, hardly noticing how it gently shook when he brushed a strand of hair away from her face.
That magnetic pull had drawn him a step closer, and he was lost in this strange, lazy haze. Marcus was desperate to speak, to say anything, but at the same time he was comfortable with lingering in this slow moment, unsure of what he was even doing.
A sharp knock on the bathroom door halted everything instantly and he could hear Eddie's muffled voice calling for his sister. Marcus finally blinked and softly cleared his throat. His hand dropped from near her face, but his other still toyed with her fingers gently before, after a few seconds more, he reluctantly let go.

The softness in his face, now, was something she'd never seen before. It was beautiful, the emotion painted there. She didn't pull away as his hand brushed a stray piece of hair from her face. She had the distinct impression that she was trembling--that her heart was beating so hard it was shaking her whole frame. He shifted closer, and she mirrored the movement. There were mere inches between them, now. She hadn't expected anything like this, and she still couldn't identify what was happening, but she knew that this was where she wanted to be.
And then there came a knock on the door. It was as if the moment had shattered like glass. His fingertips dropped from her cheek as she looked from the door, to Marcus's face, to the door again, distressed. She couldn't ignore the soft, sleep-laden call of her voice on the other side, but she wished she didn't have to let Marcus go to answer it.
A sudden impulse struck her. She put one hand on Marcus's shoulder to steady herself as she leaned quickly forward and kissed his cheek. She did it so fast it might have been a figment of her imagination, but the residual prickle on her lips from the stubble on his cheek said otherwise.
She spun quickly around to answer the door. "E--" she didn't even get the chance to say a full syllable of his name before the boy's arms were flung around her middle, knocking the wind out of her. She was stunned into silence for a moment, then wound up laughing. "Hello to you too, honey."
"I dreamed that you were getting chased by a shadow monster," Eddie explained earnestly, his voice muffled into her stomach until he moved to look up at her face. "I had to make sure it didn't get you."
A sadness heavier than any nightmare crossed Sol's face as she smoothed her hand over Eddie's hair. It made her want to cry, to think that this poor boy whose biggest worry ought to be math homework was busy worrying about her. She smiled anyway. "I'm safe, sweetheart. You and Marcus have been taking good care of me."

The moment he dropped her hand, time seemed to speed up. A fog had been lifted from his mind, his body feeling less sluggish, but he desperately wanted that comfort back. Just standing there with her, it seemed to soothe every ache, all warring thoughts that plagued him ceased; everything that weighed down upon his shoulders had temporarily disappeared.
Had he moved even closer to her, or did she met him halfway? It was difficult to tell when all he could seem to do was focus upon her face, feeling that draw, sensing a need he'd never felt towards her before. Marcus wanted to be closer, something he could only dream of, but instead of Thornton's presence stopping him, it was little Eddie.
Perhaps that was a good thing. He was unsure, exactly, about what was going on through his head, and that was dangerous. Losing focus now, being a fool and crossing some sort of line would be a rookie mistake. He couldn't be blinded if he was going to keep them safe.
And yet, she was stilling him with that touch to his shoulder and he felt the gentle kiss to his cheek. For a moment, he stopped breathing. For a second, he might have hoped...
Then, time sped back up, and his dark eyes trailed her as she turned to answer the door. The boy was rushing in to embrace his sister over a nightmare he had, and Marcus took a small step back in the small space to give them some room.
The expression on his features softened differently this time. These two had such a bond that, despite the gap in ages, was stronger than he and Zahra ever had. He and his sister had been close for awhile...until she wanted things she shouldn't wish for, and yet she yearned and fought for them anyway.
In that moment, he remembered his own family and couldn't help the twisted feeling at the pit of his stomach. It was Isolde's words that brought him back, making him smile slightly but softly. And if he was going to continue taking good care of her, they needed to keep moving.
"We should probably get back on the road within the next half hour," he practically whispered from somewhere over her shoulder. Then, carefully, he slipped past the two and into the room to find a fresh shirt and prepare them for departure.

Sol's head turned instinctively towards the whisper over her shoulder, and she watched almost wistfully as Marcus slipped back into the bedroom.
They were getting closer and closer to safety, weren't they? And once they were able to hold still, once they had time to breathe...would they be drawn together like that again? Or was this all just an effect of the emergency they were living in?
A twist in her gut told her that the magnetic pull wouldn't be so easily broken, but she couldn't help worrying.
Eddie gave her an extra-tight squeeze which dragged her from her thoughts, and forced a soft "Ugh!" from her lungs.
"Hey, take it easy, big guy! I kinda need my internal organs, you know!" she teased.
"Nahhhhh, those are just for show!" Eddie answered, cackling as he squeezed her again as hard as he could.
"Oh! Ew! I felt that squish my guts! You're gonna squeeze the stuffing right out of me!"
"Ahaha! Victory!" Eddie crowed.
"Yes, yes, you're the strongest and toughest. Now go get dressed, strong man. We've gotta hit the road."
"Can we get hashbrowns at the McDonalds?"
Isolde laughed softly. "If they're still serving breakfast. We'll have to see. I haven't the faintest idea what time it is."
She followed her brother out of the room, helping him track down some clean socks and change out of his old clothes. She couldn't change hers, since she'd lost her bag in the chase through the woods, but she did make sure to wash up, and she pulled part of her hair back out of her face. Satisfied, she also packed up the first aid kit, and a few other things that had gotten scattered around the room.
"Alright...I think that's everything. West Coast, here we comeā¦"
